Why Vital Fitness

I started Vital Fitness to help people train with intention and purpose. That means building muscle, increasing cardio capacity, and paying attention to balance, agility, and mobility—which are all vital to longevity and to staying healthy, strong, and injury-free.

Here’s the hard truth: Aging really starts in our thirties. Loss of lean muscle mass. Decreasing bone density. Stiffer joints. Declining cardiovascular fitness. We become less agile and have less speed and power to give. All are realities of aging.

It’s time to use it or lose it, as the adage goes.

I believe functional training - using movements that reflect the actions and movements of daily life in workouts is the best approach. Functional training builds strength for squatting, picking up and carrying things, and even just getting up off the floor. It enhances balance, agility, and coordination.

Vital Fitness takes a functional fitness approach that emphasizes four areas:

Lifting weights—heavy weights—builds lean muscle mass, stimulates hormones that increase bone density, improves cardiovascular health, and even helps mobilize our joints.

We’ll teach you good form and technique to achieve the benefits of lifting while avoiding injury.

Plyometrics and agility training help our muscles respond quickly.

We’ll train the “fast twitch” muscles that keep your body responsive, so you’re ready to take on everything from daily activities to your favorite sport.

Cardio training keeps your heart strong.

Cardio training comes in many forms: weights, interval, high-intensity interval, high intensity functional, and steady-state training. We’ll use it all to build your cardio fitness.

Mobility and soft-tissue care aids in recovery.

Working out is only part of the equation. Attention to joint mobilization and muscle recovery will help you perform optimally next time you’re at the gym.

Working out should be a trifecta: challenging, effective, and fun! It doesn’t have to be scary or competitive. After all, working out isn’t about how you stack up against someone else, it’s about you and your goals.

And that’s why Vital Fitness is here. We offer great coaching and fun workouts that deliver results. I look forward to welcoming you to our community of like-minded people who want to challenge themselves and support each other on their fitness continuum.

Robyn Bruggeman, NSCA CPT, CF-L1
Founder and Lead Coach

Robyn grew up in San Francisco, where she dabbled in many sports as a kid, particularly soccer, basketball, and volleyball. She was a swimmer in high school, and then in college she discovered boxing and Muay Thai, for which she continued to train competitively well into her thirties.

Robyn began a career as a civil and environmental engineer, specializing in designing and inspecting municipal drinking water systems. Once she had kids, she gave up her engineering career to become a home manager, scheduler, and chauffeur. Through every phase, she’s been a self-professed gym rat.

In the gym, Robyn loves helping others learn good form and technique and push boundaries to achieve goals they believed impossible. She has a passion for showing others that the gym doesn’t have to be scary or intimidating; it can be a joyful place to discover your own strength and realize the depth of your potential.

Robyn holds the NSCA Certified Personal Training (CPT) certification and a CrossFit L1.  She’s also a certified Precision Nutrition Coach (PN-1) and a Menopause Health and Fitness Specialist and has the Functional Movement System Level 1 certification.
